Rauw Alejandro

Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the top-streamed track within 6 months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music did not just draw attention back to the genre, but as well to Latin music in general. In 2015 there were only two mostly songs with Spanish lyrics on the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. However, during the heights of Despacito's fame in the year 2017, there were 19 predominantly Spanish tracks which made it into the top 100. Then in 2020 the number was 41. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017. In the year following, popular artists began working with reggaeton acts. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to produce MIA (2018), while Madonna collaborated on Medellin with Maluma (2019). Certain reggaeton performers expressed their displeasure at the rise of mainstream music in the year 2020. However, a brand new group, Rauw Alejandro, wanted to continue the growth and evolution of reggaeton. It was often associated with electronic dance, as well as other forms.
